I was going to chime in with 'Goober Peas' (Peanuts). At one time food supplies were so short for the Confederate soldiers, that boiled Peanuts (Goober Peas) were all the troops had to eat. It may have been a 'comic song',but i suspect that the reality was far less than amusing,

Mark Johnson and Emory Lester recently produced a CD titled "1863" which includes some Civil War period pieces and their interpretations are wonderful.

Alan, did Charlie Moore use the ascending chord structure in Rebel Soldier? My vinyl is deep in my garage somewhere and I don't have a turntable anyway. My recollection is that the arrangement was by the Country Gentlemen. Verse 1 G (Charlie Waller solo), Verse 2 A (Waller and ?Lawson), Verse 3 C(trio, adding ?James Bailey or Bill Emerson).

    Apparently yes:

And he sang it in all three keys.
