At Jim: yes, it certainly is. I remember being in a school choir, many moons ago. We sang the song in e flat major. The ok thing was the different parts, the gentleman with their low voices did us proud, the alto and soprano also good. I was one of the young ladies then who had to do the first soprano: when you sing the last line of the song: the word in Afrikaans for only now, I recall a fifth octave b flat that really tested the limits of my voice! That is a yule memory I shall never forget.

and some other tunes from Christmas Carols for Mandolin. Some of the songs are arranged really nicely with double stops.

This tune has always been a favorite of mine around this time of year. Those Charlie Brown Holiday specials were magic. I worked it up a while back. Here's my version...

It's turned into one of my favorite tunes to sit around and have fun with...

Thanks to Mandosummers and Manfredhacker -
love the tunes! YOu are all so smart with the links you can post. I have plucked up the courage to attach and e-mail to one or two friends on mando café, but I am still not OK with things like links on youtube. I have now at least got Audacity. Let's see where we go from here.
    Happy holiday playing all!

A Yule memory I will always treasure. Also a lesson, "Oh Holy Night" is really hard to sing!
Amen. This is one of the reasons my guitar stays tuned down a whole step.

    Another holiday tune:
Started to wrk on "Hark the Herald Angels Sing". Practicing lead, but working also on a neat accompaniment, picking, not strumming.

I'm taking webcam lessons from Emory, so I've got the tab to O Come O Come Emanuel, and I've got an old book of transcriptions of some of John Fahey's Christmas songs, and I fake a few others by ear.

I discovered the above pdf from a few years ago. Wish it had some lush chords to play at pauses, but that's a good thing to experiment with to flesh the arrangements out.

I'm playing this tune, "In the Bleak Midwinter." I just learned it today and thought that I would do a quick recording with guitar and mandolin. This is just recorded with my amature gear: Blue Snowball USB mic into my MacBook, Audacity, and effects added with Garage Band since I am not really savy with Garage Band as yet. Oh, and I am playing my 2012 Skip Kelley F5 and my Randy Lucas dread. It's not a happy holiday tune, but I think it is a pretty tune.

It's great to read/listen to what others are working on. Here are a few Xmas arrangements that my girlfriend and I came up with a few years back.

One really great book is "Christmas Music for Mandolin" (book and CD) by Allan Alexander. The songs in this book are pretty traditional and most have very pretty variations. I have enjoyed this immensely! Another good one is "Evergreen" by Butch Baldasari. Butch is big on avoiding open strings, so there are lots of 7th fret D's, A's and E's in the tablature. Great practice, although sometimes challenging.

At Cheryl and Lorraine, many thanks.
I am at the moment playing lead of "Once in Royal David City" Beautiful. Want to try and play the chords and then hopefully record the whole lot.
    Did White Christmas also.

    Hallelujah Christmas by Cloverton.
It's derivation of a Leonard Cohen tune.

Last weekend we volunteered to open our home for the local "Holiday Victorian Homes Tour" by the historical society. So we had about 150 guests cycling through during a four-hour period. My fiddler S.O. and I provided some background music, along with some friends on piano and flute doing another set. Most of what we played was Scottish or Irish trad, but we did include a few holiday tunes in our fiddle + mandolin/guitar duo set:

"Christmas Day I Da Morning" (the Shetland tune, not the other one).

    "Christmas Carousing," a fun reel.

    "O Tannenbaum."

"Greensleeves," on fingerstyle guitar with fiddle drone supporting.

"Oy Chanuka" and "Sevivon," traditional Hanukkah tunes with a scale (Fraygish?) that makes a nice contrast to the other music.

This is always a fun topic. My band has worked up a few numbers, trying to stay in keeping with our main style or character - a mix of swing, ragtime, jug band, rockabilly, and other genres. These include two from Elvis - "Santa Claus Is Back In Town" and "Blue Christmas" - The Drifters' doo-wop version of "White Christmas," Chuck Berry's "Run Run, Rudolph," "Jingle Bell Rock," "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree," and though we've only played it once, "Jingle Bells" - which I want to speed up at the end into breakdown tempo.

Solo songs include more standard fare: "Silver Bells" (thank you, Willie Nelson, for introducing me to this lovely melody on hi Christmas album decades ago), "White Christmas," in the loathsome key of Ab, which the band learned it in (thus compelling me to practice it), "Silent Night," and so forth. But my favorite is a medley in G, done rather forcefully, almost punk style, with a heavy rhythmic attack and a lot of droning G and D strings. This usually starts with "Joy To The World" and wraps up with a slam-bang "Angels We Have Heard On High." In between there could be "Hark The Herald Angels Sing," "Adeste Fidelis," whatever pops into my head. The main thing is to play loud, fast, and energetically. Since I am doing this at work, a coffee l]=kiosk in a somewhat dilapidated mall, I am trying to attract attention. Sometimes this works. The best moments are when I get looks of recognition from kids. Their eyes light up, they stop in their tracks, and if they are sitting on a nearby bench, they watch with fascination and sometimes even sing along. These are really sweet moments and transcend all the less relevant aspects of the surroundings.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller
