When I was a child I took several years of piano lessons; even after I stopped, it was Christmas tradition anytime I spent Christmas at my parents' house for me to sit down at the piano and plunk out what tunes I could by ear. I did't have the money (or much desire) to travel back to my home state for the holidays this year, so no piano carols for me, but I realized a couple of nights ago that I'm much more competent with a mandolin now than I've ever been before, so I thought maybe I'd noodle around and try to work out a few tunes. It was great! In the past few days I've figured out simple melodies for "Silent Night", "The First Noel", "O Come, O Come Emmanuel", and others, and have tried to figure out a bit more complex version of "What Child is This" (a personal favourite). It's been a lot of fun to rediscover that tradition of making music around the holidays (and to realize that I'm better at playing by ear than I was a year ago).

Well, my Holidays started off playing a few christmas tunes, but they've tuned into a few Irish tunes that I've memorized and am now playing

Have just played through the North Shetland tune "Christmas Day I'da Morning" to celebrate the passing of midnight.

I always include Halloween as a Holiday,so playing the Theme fromThe Addams family gets me in the mood.

Later on I like to play my heavily tremoloed version of "Silver Bells" on mandolin.

Whatever happened to the OP, Pasha Alden? I always thought that was the coolest name I ever heard.

Music is a big part of our Christmas. My wife and sis-in-law and I will go play carols in some local retirement homes. No mandolin, unfortunately, because the guitar just works better for singalongs.

"What Child is This/Greensleeves". Sounds great on any instrument, but truly awesome on the Martin C or the Nyberg Mandola.

I just bought several new (to me) Christmas books to start working on for this year. I had some easy mandolin Christmas books before, these are a bit more difficult. Different music, hopefully not too hard for me. Actually nothing is too hard, just takes more work to get it correct!

My wife is a great piano player, so this is her season.

We have a tradition on Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's not really an official holiday until my wife and her aunt sing "Fat Bottom Girls" near the end of the evening. \
