    Default 1927 Martin Tenor guitar

The seller say's this is a style 5, if so I think it is the first one I have seen with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a Spruce top. It sure is sweet.

Man, is that ever a sweet old Martin tenor guitar. I wonder what it will go up to?

    Spruce - is this yours?

I lost on a recent 53 Martin tenor that was minus it's neck. It went for about $150 more than my top. I thought it would make a manageable project. Been jonesing for a tenor.
    Wish someone offered a kit.

I doubt it is Spruces, the seller thinks the back and sides are Mahogany.

Spruce, do you know this instrument?

I've been looking for an old Martin tenor, and I never even knew such a thing existed...
    What a lovely instrument...

Seller says the previous owner, a Mr. Schmiedel, played in "bluegrass bands" around San Francisco in the "'20's and '30's."

So we have a new chronology for bluegrass, decades earlier than currently thought; a new bluegrass pioneer, Albert Schmiedel; and a new bluegrass instrument, tenor guitar. So much accepted history overthrown by a single eBay posting!

Dimensions as stated seem correct for a "5" body:

    Martin Flat Top Body Sizes.

Size Frets Width Depth Body Len
    ---- ----- ----- ----- -------

    5 12 11 1/4 3 7/8 16

Rosewood body and ornamentation seem consistent with "28" models, so this could be called a 5-28T, right?

Maybe it's just the pictures, but it looks refinished to me.

A 5-21T has been on and off the Seattle Craig's List for a couple of years now. Seller wants a lot more than 1K.

I agree, probably an old refinish. Cool guitar.
