Default Looking For some Quebecois Tunes

    Hey Guys and Gals!

I actually come from Montreal but was raised in an immigrant family so I never really got to experience the Quebecois Folk Scene, nor do I know anyone who has.

Some of my co-workers found out that I am learning to play the mandolin last Christmas and I'd like to surprise them with some recognizable Quebecois mando music this year. As I'll have 2 months to practice I'm looking for a few tunes to play and maybe sing along with them.

    Any suggestions?

    Montreal Session Tunebook

    Identitairs Quebecois

The above are in musical notation.

if you want to learn by ear, the Canadian government has this archive of old recordings, The Virtual Gramophone, some of which are Quebecois.

The Portland Collection has tons of Quebecois tunes. Most iconic would be Reel de Montreal.

I highly recommend the Danse ce soir! tunebook and accompanying CD. Excellent resource on all aspects of traditonal Québécois repertoire or performance.

And Trente Sous Zéro has been a great online source for all kinds of books and CDs of trad music from the north. Run by noted fiddlers Guy Bouchard & Laura Sadowsky. Not sure how actively they are updating the catalog, but definitely worth checking out.

Check this out for some trad tunes from Québec featuring the mandolin. Samples here.
