Congratulations Isaac!
Isaac's dad told me that he (IE) was in the middle of recording a CD in Nashville.
Did he pick the Ellis for his prize?

Yes, he picked the Ellis.
Wise choice. It looks like he plays a Heiden F5. It'll make a nice pair.

Are there any public recordings of the winning performances, or is that disallowed or something? I couldn't find anything on YouTube. Just curious what these guys sounded like.
Not his performance at Winfield but you can see how he could win.

A great study in right hand technique (and left hand ).

Thanks for that link, Don.
Yeah he seems to know his way around that mandolin pretty good alright, nice pickin'.
I don't recognize the tune though, the video says it's "Dinah", but it's not the regular fiddle-tune Dinah I know. I can't tell if he's reinterpreted it somehow, or if it's an entirely different tune. Anyway, nice playing.
Yup, I agree. I like his precision and yet at the same time how relaxed and efficient (no wasted motion) that his playing is. Nice balance.
This was one of the toughest Mando contests I've seen at Winfield. The first round was packed with great players, and honestly, any of them could have made the cut. Isaac played terrific on a couple of Brazilian tunes in the final round, and earned a well-deserved win.
I got to back up my good friend Solly Burton, who swung his way to second place with "Take me out to the ballgame." If you haven't heard Solly play, you should! I think he's one of the best swing mandolin players in the country.
I only heard Holton warming up backstage, and knew he was a ton.
They don't allow videotaping during the contests, so this is one of those festivals you really just have to experience for yourself! It's a unique event. The contests are a very small part of the festival.

Does anyone know who the other two finalists were?
2011 Gibson F-5G
2011 Martin HD-28V
2008 Martin 000-15
2013 Gibson J-35
2013 Gibson ES-195 "Trans-Amber"
The very first mandolin workshop I attended was put on by Isaac Eicher before Mischievous Swing played a show at a local venue. I was the only attendee, so it was basically a private lesson. He was playing the Ellis that he had won at Winfield before.
What a mandolinist! Impressive!
Very nice young man too, as is Solly Burton.
It ain't gotta be perfect, as long as it's perfect enough!

Chris Thile actually won the Mandolin competition in 1993.
3 Texas boys in the top 5.
Breedlove Quartz FF with K&K Twin - Weber Big Horn - Fender FM62SCE
Wall Hangers - 1970's Stella A and 60's Kay Kraft
Whether you slow your roll or mash on it, enjoy the ride.
Maybe Thile will return for his 30 year reunion
