This is a traditional Swedish dance performed by Sofia Karlsson (among many others).
Would love to play this lovely tune.
Thanks!

Hi Leslie,
I think the correct spelling is "Schottis från Malung", after the town of Malung in Dalarna. The most comprehensive site for Scandinavian dance is spillefolk.dk, which doesn't have a tune with that name, but does have three schottis marked as being "from Malung". I suspect the one you're looking for may be "Böl Olles Schottis". The sheet music is here.

The big problem with Swedish tunes is that many don't have unique names, more like Tune from This Town or Tune after Some Musician. I found the tune on Sophia Karlsson's CD "Guitar Stories" on Spotify but here is the link that Spotify generates: Schottis från Malung. Or can you hear an excerpt from that cut here on Amazon.
Martin: is that the same tune you found? Looks like it though I just glanced and did not play it.

I'm pretty sure it is the same tune. Sophia Karlsson's arrangement doesn't have much of a dance character, but here is the same tune played for an actual dance: Schottis från Malung. For comparison, here is a dance recording under the "other" name: Böl Olles Schottis. Sounds pretty similar to me.

Just the snippet sounds like either a heavily reworked version of Bol Ole or a different tune.

Thank you Eric. I didn't know this about the titles. Thank you for your help. Happy New Year! Diane

Yes Eric it is heavily reworked on the Karlsson track. But this is the tune I was looking for.
Thank you! Leslie
Following on from that discussion, I have used a quiet spell this afternoon to record this lovely schottis on mandolin, as a set with another schottis from the town of Malung which came up in my search, "Sjutti Schottis". "Böl Olles Schottis" starts at 0:56 seconds.
Scores are here:

Happy New Year to all!

Very nice job on the playing. Fun to hear how others interpret the tune. For some reason, Bol-Olle is an allspel (common) tune around here. And the local version has become heavy sounding. More like a Russian tune than a Swedish. Don't know why that is. Been that way since I started playing in the local Scandinavian music scene.

There's a schottis fran mulang in the Vicki Swan folio. It must be a different piece.? Is that a version you're speaking of, Eric?
Unfortunately, I don't have that book, so can't answer you. Sorry.
This is closer to the way we play it around here - https://youtu.be/tnb-_6jWQVQ

That's so different than the version I know. I'll post a clip of it in a day or two - I'm stuck in a hotel room for the next 3 days, but at least I've got my fiddle with me!
