    Default Butchered Holst

Take the monkey off the stick, cut an approximate hole in the beautiful pickguard for it, cram the volume/tone control through the ff hole, find a couple random screws and use your 18V drill to ram them in there without drilling holes. Really? Could be a bargain. Could be a nightmare. Buy it so I don't.

Butchered may be an exaggeration, IMHO. Sure, too bad about the pickguard, it is ruined. The rest seems reversible, assuming double-faced tape was used to attach the pickup. And go to the hardware store and buy a couple matching screws for a nickel apiece. Remove the pickup, get a new pickguard made from Holst and you've saved yourself $2500 or so. I think it is priced fairly.

I asked Steve Holst about this one. He said it wasn't a blonde when it left his shop. FYI. I'm no longer tempted.

Interesting. I checked his website and couldn't find it in his gallery. I was also wondering if the fingerboard "Florida" was chopped off to fit the pickup? Most of the mandolins on his website didn't have a flat bottom to the fingerboard. The one that did was an electrified acoustic with a magnetic pickup, so? Not sure....modified, partially refinished?, actually we're getting closer to "butchered!"

I purchased a gorgeous Decava Limehouse Blues mandolin that suffered a similar hack upgrade. One of its owners decided to change the tailpiece, no issue with that. Problem is its endpin was drilled and installed about 3/16" off center. Just enough to make the strings just barely fit on the fingerboard on the bridge side. Don't think this can be corrected, so it's become an art deco wall hanging in my living room.

The original Jade tailpiece is off the instrument in the case to the left.

I would think that Limehouse Blues would be easy to fix. Plug the endpin and re-mount the tailpiece correctly. Then use a screw strap pin. But that's me and I'm probably wrong.

Possible. Problem is the new tailpiece required an opening wide enough to hollow out for a 1/4" jack. A lot of wood gone, so I'm not sure with a hole this big if there would be enough structural integrity to make a move. Might try, someday.

The Wife also liked the way it looked on our wall. She bought a roomful of furniture and decor to match the teal.

Aha! Also, the nice thing about a "wall hanger" is that there is such a lower threshold required for playability!
