Thread: Jade Mandolin

    Default Jade Mandolin

Having read about them on here I am really interested in getting a Jade mandolin. Do they ever pop up for sale here? Google searches don't help much.

They pop up in Classifieds now and then, but it is rare. I don't know how many were made before it all ended, but it's got to be a pretty small number. I have seen two in person and really liked them both. If you ever find one, you'll have a nice little piece of mandolin history. Good luck.

I don't think that more than 50 or so were ever made. It's rare to see one for sale.

Do they allow WTB threads in the classifieds? I am not sure how that works here.

There is a "Wanted" section in the Classifieds.

I think Bob built not a lot more than 50 mandolins, I think there are 38 f-style mandolins and a couple of a-style.

Every thread on the Cafe with the word Jade in it can be found here.

Every thread with the word McRee in it can be found here.

Bob McRee attempted to build the Jade brand name by having the mandolins built in a shop in China. It was a noble experiment cut short by his failing health.

..and from what I recall, they were getting good reviews at the time.

I still have my Jade F5. It is signed as a prototype, with a Varnish finish. I have replaced the bridge, but otherwise it's all original.
I bought it to be my 2nd" mando, and it has opened up wonderfully with great volume and tone (I think).Get's played as much as my Henderson!
Bob also made F-4's, that he called F-4.5's. I would love to find one of those for sale!

They were. A small (maybe 3 man?) shop.

I was thinking of getting one after selling my Collings MT. Don't know. There is a lot of positive input.

FWIW, I've spent some time with it and think it plays well. As you can see in the pics, it's seen some "love" but its structurally solid. Most importantly, it sounds nice.

Welcome to the Cafe. In general we don't mix commerce with threads so, once you do place your Jade up for sale, it's no longer fair game for you to discuss it here.
