Default My 4th mandolin build, 2nd one built from scratch

Hello everybody, I have become heavily addicted to building mandolins. My first was an IV F-5 kit, second was the Stew-Mac F-5 kit. Now I’m building from scratch. This mandolin has a compound radius fretboard, 1 1/8 nut, spruce top, flamed maple back, sides, and neck, torch and wire inlay, k and k internal, Custom James tailpiece. Built using the Adrien (Hogo) plans. #4,5,6 were built as a batch. #4 is the only one with color as of today. Hagerty mandolins on Facebook. I wanna say thank you to the mandolin cafe and all of its amazing members. Without you all I would be floundering in the world of mandolin construction. I plan on building as many mandolins as I can.

The mandolin pictured has just received its first coat of varnish.

Jacob, nice job! Everything about it looks awesome! I love the figure in the back and the inlay is sharp looking!
What kind of varnish are you using?

So after the tru-oil your are layering on shellac with some oil on the rag?

What steps are you doing for the staining of the spruce top? I thought that your sunburst looked nice!

I apply the stain to the top using an airbrush, then I apply a nice coat of shellac with a spray gun, let it dry. Then I begin to sand till level, if I need another coat of shellac it is applied at this point and level sanded again. Let dry go at least a week before sanding. After it’s level sanded I’m gonna apply 2-3 coats of tru-oil wipe on, wipe off. Then finally a very thin coat of shellac will be applied and French polished. Dry and cure for six weeks

Sounds like a plan I would like to try -- it must be a very thin finish. I also like the emphasis on shellac -- much healthy product to use then lacquer or varnish. Tru-oil is not so bad to use safely without a hood.

Jacob, I'm with you on building mandolins being addictive! I spend way more time working in the shop and have very little time devoted to picking.

Hats off to anyone that would even attempt such a build. If i cant put it together with a hammer and gorilla glue, i back off.
    Its not a backwards guitar.

Beautiful work and such a busy schedule!

But wait until you're retired, you'll wonder how you ever had time to work
