Thread: Who Makes Pick Guards These Days?

Default Who Makes Pick Guards These Days?

I know they aren't super popular anymore, but I like them. I'd like to get a full size A pick guard for my mandolin. I was going to get it from Hill Country Strings but Doug is retiring. I would like to get one in imitation tortoise shell, or in a red or blond wood to match my mandolin or its accouterments, full three inch A style pick guard. Where can I find one?

Give Doug a call or email him. He may have some inventory left, if not I think The Mandolin Store has some. What are you putting it on?

The KM-272. Just thinking of upgrading the black ABS one it comes with.

Doug has non-custom guards if you look on his site.

How are those 'abbreviated' ones secured to the instrument?

The ones on my Kimbles are secured with a pin and a screw. The one on my GBOM (following the advice given to me by Austin Clark) is held on by the simple friction of two pins. I suppose I couls just pull it off but I've never tried.

Anyone in the UK looking for a pickguard builder might like to look here - http://www.jacksinstrumentservices.c...e-cutting.html - no personal experience; only found the website earlier today. I assume he can make them for mandolin. Don't know if Ivan knows him; he's just down the road from him.

I'm with you on this one. You can source pickguard material of your choice and make your own exactly as you want; the tools required for fabrication are basic.

Two smooth pins. Friction holds them very securely. If not, you just bend one of the pins slightly. Then it will.
