I absolutely loved it. I would go to a concert of that in a heartbeat. The level of interplay between these musicians is amazing. That alone would be worth the admission price.

I enjoy musicians at the top of their game in any genre. There is a point at which the quality of their work transcends the genre. I hear that in this performance.

As for the hair style; who cares? To me, that is not what this is about anyway.

So again, I absolutely loved it. Demetrius, thanks very much for posting this.

Oh goody! It's my weekly chance to learn new disparaging terms for the virtuosic instrumental music I've enjoyed for decades in any number of genres and styles, where the melody is a whisper-thin framework upon which to hang complex exploration and personal expression.

    reads thread

    "Not music"..."Onanism"..."Jazz"...

Oh, same old stuff then? *Yawn* Carry on.

I loved this. I smiled the whole time listening. Only crit I have (and this may be the fault of my speakers more than anything) is that the mandolin gets drowned out, but this was fun.

To each their own, I suppose!

Loved it! Like a great song is great whatever style it’s played in a great player is great whatever genre that they choose to play in and Chris Thile appears to be someone who won’t be pigeonholed.

But from some of the responses I’m surprised that nobody has yelled “Judas” yet

I loved it too. I am an old time player mostly playing for square dances, but one band I play in, is an eco folk rock??? band and I am required to do improvised leads. Last night I played a gig with two people, we don't play together, didn't practice, and have different musical tastes and styles. For the most part it was quite good, challenging, and lots of fun. Jamming has a whole other fun aspect and watching two musicians who have the talent to really jam is what some music is all about. No jamming in old time.

Frank Profitt reportedly said, "I'd like to be able to play banjo like Earl Scruggs -- and then not do it." I have somewhat the same "take" on Chris Thile. An amazing musician, and apparently a likable and approachable one, but one who has a bit of trouble reaching me emotionally.

There's a reactionary part of me that says, "The tunes I like are the ones I find myself whistling to myself when I'm raking leaves or typing on my Mac." Might be Red-haired Boy or Take Five or Tequila, but there's a "hook" somewhere that imbeds them in my music memory.

This one left me admiring the skill and interplay of two world-class instrumentalists -- but unhooked. Sorry if that makes me an unsophisticate.

That's what spontaneous improvisation is. Why would you want to play it exactly the same again?

The division of acceptance reminds me of how my dad hated my brothers' Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. He didn't get it, and called it junk. Be careful dismissing something outside your comfort zone!

Both Willie and Al are right in this context, a piece like this is really meant to be enjoyed live, where the spark of creativity and musicianship unfolds before you. Watching it on a video, or listening to it on any format, leaves out the emotional rush of being in the moment. But, because it was on the old PHC or new Town hall, or whatever, it's preserved for posterity, where we can all comment on it.

A kind of fun exercise would be to think what would happen in an alternative universe. I'd be curious to see how this would be perceived if, say, Joe K. Walsh were chosen as the replacement host. Listen to his own Sweet Loam record, pick two tracks, his takes on Mole In The Ground and Ain't No One Like You, and he'd have been a better fit in many ways. You'd get the same great musicians in the house band; they all travel in the same circles, and they all know Joe, many through his work at Berklee. If that universe existed, would this video ever have been recorded? Would any outside of hard-core Chris Thile fans know of this band? Which then means, how much really interesting stuff are we totally unaware of?

I wish I had 1/1,000 of the talent the man has. Is it a waste simply because he isn't playing something 'traditional'? .... the answer lies in the one who views it. Carry on Mr. Thile!!
