Jazz Workshop Performance

A couple of clips from a public performance by our workshop group. A good pass at Cedar Walton's "Bolivia" and a new one for the group, "Driftin' ", from Herbie Hanckock's first LP, "Taking Off".

I am using my Almuse 10-string solidbody through the house Fender Deluxe amp. We felt good about our first time out. New tunes we are working on include Michael Brecker's "African Skies", Mike Stern's "Suspone, and McCoy Tyner's "Search for Peace". I am very happy to have found this venue for working on technique and repertoire.

I can only imagine that the reason these terrific clips have elicited no comments is that it's hard to know what to say. This kind of music - though perhaps almost the norm for the jazz you'd hear played live in a club - is unfamiliar in a mandolin context. It would be a pity if there was no response to it in the jazz sub-forum of the Mandolin Cafe.

So - let me say how much I've enjoyed listening to the instrument holding its own with horns and particularly taking a step a decade or two forward from the 1930's, 40's, 50's jazz with which we have become so comfortable on mandolin.

Wonderful to hear more folks successfully stepping to jazz world.... You hold up your end beautifully....nice to hear mandolin fit into arranged Jazz with horns, piano, drums, bass.... Lots of work there that shows

Nice Tom! I love the Hackensack take. I also listened to a few others you had posted. I dig the solo All Blues and Nardis, pretty amazing chord melody. I would love to hear your version of Search for Peace. I have noodled around on that one since I heard it on the Phillips, Grier, and Flinner Album. Nice playing!!
