This has an echoey sound to me, perhaps because of the double top. What I mean is that the notes seem to have several resonances at once. This muddies the sound a bit to my ears, but also creates a very deep resonance, especially with full chords strummed.
I also think the set up may need a bit of fine tuning, Yaron. I heard some buzzing but that may have been the player not being familiar with the new instrument.
Please take these comments as constructive in their intent. I think this instrument is quite lovely and has a great deal of potential.

There's quite a bit of "ambience" in the recordings, so it's hard to tell what's intrinsic to the instrument, and what's coming from the recording space. It is a good test of the instrument in a concert setting though - and in that context I thought it works extremely well - especially on the second piece.

Bill, if you listen to the second slower piece everything sounds much more cleanly played, so I suspect what you put down to fret noise, was the player being unfamiliar with the new instrument when playing at full tilt. Much easier/quicker to adapt and get up to speed on the slower pieces.

As for clarity... like Bill I detected some loss in clarity up the neck... but it's so very hard to achieve that and get a good dark lower register... so it may be a case of making a choice whether you want bright and clear like a bowlback, or more dark and moody. It's interesting that this one can be quite different from say a bowlback, but still sound very "classical"... almost like a mandolin version of the classical nylon string guitar... could be interesting to hear a duet between the two!

Quite astute comments, John, and I agree with them. It is hard to tell what is because of the instrument and what is from the surroundings. I do agree the second recording is much clearer. It is also slower which is why I wondered if some sort of echo or delay effect is occurring. Could the two tops resonate to different frequencies and cause this?

I think it's just ambience and fairly high gain on the audio recording. Meaning you hear the sounds of moving and fretting more than you would on a studio recording where a more focused mic is placed nearer the instrument.
I bet this instrument would record very well, by the way, and it sounds very nice, very much an incremental development of the school of Israeli mandolins.

Beautiful instrument, Yaron, and I love the sound. I look forward to seeing your future builds and also hearing some additional recordings on this one.

One question unrelated to the instrument, if you don't mind. What is the piece in this second recording?
