Nice! A good Gibson is tough to beat.

Congrats! I hope you enjoy your 2002 as much as I'm enjoying my 2002!

I've got the same model, ugly looking thing but sounds brilliant.

Yup, personal tastes I guess...
If I were commissioning a new F-style, I'd want the same color and binding, the ability to see the wood without a sunburst, the subtle contrasts between the darkly finished wood grain and the black binding, the un-dotted ebony fingerboard, the ebony pickguard and the armrest. Basically I'd want the same simplistic viewing approach.
The only thing I don't like about the finish is that it's extremely soft and thin on the top, and as such it marks very easily; I've often wondered if it's varnish.
I agree about brilliant sound though.
Unless I lose it somehow, this mandolin is a lifetime instrument for me.
Note to the OP: I wish I lived close enough to visit Carter's. May not buy anything, but I'm absolutely sure I'd want to.

Per DH, F-9 mandolins are finished with thin coats of satin lacquer. Here's my 2015 (DH signature). Upgrades include Schaller gold tuners, EVO Gold FW74 frets, Bruce Weber traditional bridge (awesome!), James t/p.
Dandy mandolin.
Yup...
Here's some documentation for the 2002-2003 vintage F-9...

Great deal man-a nice plain no frills Gibson that's the goods-same as high end stuff ut not as fancy! Sound is all that matters anyway!
Same here - great mandolins! Congrats!I had one at one time. The looks is one of the things that attracted me to it. Simple and unadorned, no frills.
