    Default Johann in the House

My profile of luthier Johann Brentrup has been publisshed in the Sept issue of the magazine of the Minnesota Bluegrass Old Time Music Association. You can download the PDF here:

Hans was great to work with. I hope someday to try one of his instruments.

Great quote from this interview --

What is the quality you most
    admire in a customer?

I admire customers who know what
they want, get it all straight at the
outset, then let me do the work. I send
    customers progress reports and photos
to let them know how the instrument
is progressing. Once I start cutting
wood, it’s best not to start making
changes. The adage is: “Never upset
    your builder.”

I've got to admit this made me feel good:

Q: There is a Brentrup mandolin registry set up by owners and admirers, not affiliated with you. The only other registry I could find was for D’Angelico. What do you think inspires such passion among Brentrup players?

A: The registry was set up by an individual and he asked me before he set it up, and I’ve stayed out of it because I don’t want to influence it. I’m happy that he did it, and grateful. People contribute to the registry because they love their instruments; there’s an element of appreciation they have toward me, I guess. Some may be also hoping for an appreciation in value of their instrument, in case they do sell them."
