Default Poem Entry For The Collings Contest

Hi all. Long time listener, first time caller ...

Stopped by today and saw the Collings MT2 Giveaway. Thought I'd submit an entry and try my luck.

However, I misread the entry page and thought that the "list your reasons for the mandolin's name" field allowed for 250 words instead of 250 characters. I wrote up the following, and then realized I'd never have a place to share it, since it didn't follow the contest rules.

Anyway, I really liked how it turned out and thought I'd post it here. My suggestion for the name of the mandolin is "The Mariner" ...

    --

Here's a old story that rarely gets told
There's a crater named Bach, out on Mercury's pole

So distant, it could barely be seen, but that's when
We launched a new space probe named the Mariner 10

The Mariner's mission: go explore Bach
And give us new insights on Mercury's rock

How does it spin, what's out there, and why?
This instrument, Mariner, took us past the sky

Up past the heavens and out into space
Where genius and brilliance meet beauty and grace

And from way down here, we normal folk dare
To dream what it's like past that thinnest of air

For every great while, an explorer will reach
And bring us all back a few songs from the breach

And so, too, this mando, this Mariner, will
There's uncharted space 'tween its frets even still

Waiting for journeys and discoveries to come
Just as all mariners past have yet done

    Well done!

Just curious, have the entry's been posted somewhere? This is a very creative bunch of bannana's, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see them...

    Roses are red,
    violets are blue,
    I want to win this,
    and so do you.

    Violets are blue,
    roses are red,
    if someone else wins it,
    I'll wish they were dead.

    Flowers are pretty,
    they have a nice scent;
and I'm glad names, not poems
    are this contest's intent.

    This Is Just To Say

    I have changed
    the strings
    that were on
    your mando

    and which
    you were probably
    going to
    get around to doing

    Forgive me
    they were old
    and rusty
    and dead.

I think we have a winner. My entry was fairly silly but this is beautiful. If I had a vote, this would probably be it.

I am glad they did not ask for 250 words. I would not have a chance. Although I don't really think my entry has much of a chance any way. Really wish I could remember what my entry was.

I think they should officially name it "Bruce" (my entry). (But I personally would call 'mine' "Mr. Neutron")

    1. Bruce

    2. Mr. Neutron

    3. Wodewick

    4. "Gorn"
Chapman: Yes, you can't beat wood. Gorn.

    Idle: What's gone, dear?

Chapman: Nothing, nothing -- just like the word, it gives me confidence. Gorn. Gorn -- it's got a sort of *woody* quality about it. Gorn. Go-o-orn. Much better than 'newspaper' or 'litter bin'.

As a prize is this fine mandolin
    in a contest promoted wherein
    You name it creatively,
    explain innovatively,
But it will be mine, to your collective chagrin!

Is the mandolin an A-style or F-style, or can you choose if you win? Also: What are the other prizes?

Alas, I went more for brevity than wit!

From what I can gather, the other prizes are signed copies of the Thile bach CD.

When they say "planet waves gift pack," what is in the pack, other than the strings and the CD? Just curious, because it seems like there is more
