Noticed there is an unusual and rare c. 1936-38 Epiphone scroll body mando on the bay.
I wonder if it's an "Artist" model (one below the Windsor) ... never seen one of these before! It appears to be sold. Anyone here bought it?

Wow...
Wonder how the binding got so screwed up, and yet the case is pretty well preserved...?
Binding failure in the case?
Cool looking instrument...

I thought it might be a Windsor. I have only seen a few of these around. Price was good but it looks like it may need a lot of work. I cannot tell whether all the binding was disintegrating or just dirty. Missing pickguard. I am not sure about the bridge.
These just do not have the gracefulness of Gibson scroll models IMHO. I like the inlay on the peghead but the peghead shape is very clunky. Still this could be a cool mandolin.
I do have a soft spot in my heart for Epiphone instruments tho i do not own any mandolins, just a nice archtop guitar.

I checked my old Epiphone catalogs and it seems to be an Artist model indeed. The 1936 catalog doesn't show a picture of an Artist, but the 1939 catalog does (see pic). Note that the headstock shape had changed from asymmetrical to center-dip, other specs seem to be similar (headstock inlay like that of the Broadway guitar, fretboard markers like the Blackstone guitar).
It's very common to see deteriorated binding (and pickguards) on Epiphones of this era.

These have been discussed a few times on the cafe. Here's on thread.

It looks like it has suffered the dreaded off gassing of the binding. I had to totally rebind a 60's period Gibson guitar a while back. It was such a pain to remove the old binding without removing bits of wood. I don't think I'd take on another job like that unless I just had to have the particular instrument.
