    Alright, I'll look into some used and see what I can do before I think about undertaking building one. Thanks again to everyone who gave info and advice! I'll keep you posted on what I decide.

    For a new or used first mandolin I would highly recommend a Big Muddy. these all came from the factory well set up. and often a dealer will fine tune them if needed. but i think that they are excellent instruments whether a first instument or a lifetime instrument. comments on this site on Big Muddy are almost all very complimentry. For $300+ you will be getting a wonderful instrument which shuld keep you happy for at least a few years.

    Joe: While you are building the U.S made mandolin / you are stuck with the Import in the price range.
