Can anyone make out what he's playing? It's a great mandolin song but for the life of me I cant figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

Several mandolins played in this set - I think what Ian plays here (from 2:40 into the video) is probably a Fylde Lucetta.

Yes indeed. I can't quite make out the fingering, the opening verse is a Am-F-G progression I think though.

Chords are here, but you'll have to try if they are correct.

There is a quite a good complete GuitarPro tab for the song here:

    http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/j/je...guitar_pro.htm

The tab includes all of the parts including Ian's mandolin part. You have to have GuitarPro to read the file though.

By the way, I saw Ian Anderson playing Thick As A Brick 1 & 2 yesterday.... No mandolin used during his concert (which was great).

Here is an ASCII export of the mandolin part for the non-GuitarPro enabled.

I know this is a very late reply but I've been working on this song recently. If it helps, here is the intro and coda in common music notation. I've also added reasonable chords, too, because none of the versions I've seen on the web ever give them! This plays very nicely on the G, D and A strings of the mandolin, which gives you the option of easily moving up a perfect fifth (equivalent to going down a perfect fourth) without changing the fingering if it's too high for the singer to manage.

    Enjoy

Another great song Pussy Willow. Ian using his fylde. Pussy Willow.
