    Default Wintergrass 2012

Did a search and didn't find this thread yet. This will be my first Wintergrass, and I'd like to meet other cafe members that are attending. Is there a time/place where mandolincafe folks plan to meet up? I plan on being there Thurs thru Sunday.

Yeah, maybe it's time to start thinking about Wintergrass. We didn't do a mando tasting last year - anyone of for that? Meet n' greet is always nice and I'm always up for a cocktail party.

BTW - I ran into Steven Ruffo over the weekend at the River City Music Festival and it sounds like were are gonna have a special mandolin event at Wintergrass. It hasn't been totally confirmed, but as the details come together I'll keep you posted.

If it walks like a duck and it talks like a duck and it sounds like a duck, it's probably The Duck.

I'll be there again with four or five of my mandolins (four Fs and an A) at the Music Caravan booth. I have a couple of two points in the works but don't know if one will be ready by then. I'm definitely up for a meet and greet and a tasting.

I'm in Thur-Sun. Should be a blast. Hope the Oregon Bluegrass Association is hosting a suite again. Great folks. A MandoCafe tasting/jam would be fun, too.

    The Duck? Holy smokes...

Wonder if BG 45 is limber enough to pull out this old gem?

OBA and CBA will most likely have suites and be full on jamming. I've been a little bit disappointed in the WBA's involvement in the past, but they were at River City so maybe that will change. We're looking into a separate venue for the mandolin event.

Yeah, we gotta ask Akira if he can still pick the mando behind his head!

I hope to be there. River City last weekend was my first festival. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Is it OK to be a relative newbie jammer at these things? I didn't take my mandolin to River City and those I saw jamming I had seen on stage as well. Sort of intimidating for a newbie, but am game if no one cares how inept one is. If there is a "tasting" I can bring my Silverangel A (fir over myrtle). Hope to see some cafe members there.
    Thanks

Several mandolins of varying quality-any one of which deserves a better player than I am.......

Definately bring your mando. There's all levels of jamming, so don't be intimidated and jump right in. Oftentimes there will be a workshop that will focus on beginners and jamming. One of the most most sucessful from a couple of years back was run by my friend Gary Davidson and the focus was songs with two chords.

Bringing this forward from the emando section.....

I think we need to have a session for the emando folks (myself included). I will bring my Mann 5-string Bari along with the amp.

I am with you on the joining the Oregon BGA suite. Those were some fun jams last year both at WG and River Ciity.
I still fondly remember one of my first Wintergrass festivals... walking in the Sheraton and there was Big Mon himself leading the jam. I learned Southern Flavor that day! Monroe posed for a picture with my daughter who was then just a little girl - now she's 25!Click image for larger version.

All right, it's official now ('cos the internets sez so).

Arkira Otsuka will be conducting a mandolin workshop on Friday at 3:00PM, dedicated to John Duffy. I would imagine The Duck will be quacking in Bellevue!

At 10:15 on Saturday there's a workshop on Llyod Loar mandolins - I sure you'll be able to pick one up for yourself at bargain prices!

...and then there is "Mando Madness" with Tony Williamson on Saturday at 2:30. Madness, madness I say!

You can find all of the workshop information here:

I'm also gonna see about finding a location for an eMando get together. No details yet, but stay tuned.

Sorry, Pete, but I'm bringing just John's F12 and no Duck this time. Looking forward to meeting you there.
I'm limber enough to lift my mandolin on my back but an upright bass? I'm not sure.

Okay mando fans - I have secured a location for a mando gathering. When would folks like to do this?

I'm thinking either Friday or Saturday night, late after the shows are over.

    Lemme know whatcha thinks!

I'll vote Saturday. Some folks might be working Friday and not be able to get on the scene until Saturday.

Thanks for organizing, Pete. Much appreciated. As a follow up to Pete M's question, it would be super fun to see/hear some electrics in action : )

It would be fun to bring my Mandobird, but hauling the Peavey 130 too would not be fun. Plus I want to bring my OM and acoustic mando.

Let me know where and when, Pete, and I'll bring an entire caboodle of electrics. But I'll need help bringing them up from the car. Can drag in an amp or two if needed. I don't know if Little Ricky will be back in one piece before Wintergrass, but I should have an Armstrong, JBovier, a couple of Korean Fenders, Gibson EM150, Roberts Tiny Moore, Bacorn, Yanuziello, Rigel, National Silvo, GoldTone, maybe an '80s Kentucky 5-string and a slim chance at a NewMAD. And probably a couple I'm forgetting, not to mention an e-mandola, an e-octave and a couple of e-tenors if people are interested in those.

Notorious: My Celtic CD--listen & buy!

    Lyon & Healy • Wood • Thormahlen • Andersen • Bacorn • Yanuziello • Fender • National • Gibson • Franke • Fuchs • Aceto • Three Hungry Pit Bulls

You got it, I would be glad to assist!

Looks like this will happen on Saturday night, probably closer to midnight as I will be working the main stage until the shows are over. Wendy Tyner has graciously offered us the use of the media room, which should be close to the location of the OBA/WBA/CBA jamming suites on the 3rd floor.

As this will all be a bit fluid feel free to send me a text message during the festival for updates or if you can't find the location. My cell is (206) 915-2665.

Sounds like a hoot and a holler!
