Default Shadow SH927 anyone heard about it??

    Hi~

Yesterday I posted about the best pickup to use. I see that I need to rephrase my question.

Has anyone tried the Shadow SH 927 NMG-4 pickup?

I like the idea of having the ability to adjust output volumes for each pair of strings. Volume, bass and treble controls also sound good. The thicker pick guard doesn't bother me as I've been wanting to put one on my Eastman anyway. If it works the way its advertised, I think it would be worth the money.

Please let me know what you think.

    Thanks,
    Patty

Looked over the info at Shadow. I think it will work exactly as advertised, but it will sound at least somewhat electric, being a magnetic pickup that will not respond to harmonics whose nodes line up with its location. In other words, it will sound like an electric guitar neck pickup, but I would think it is a good choice for a low-end mandolin. It should be brighter and more transparent in tone than a fat humbucker, with some sparkle in the highs.

It is a little bit of over-engineering to have separate channels for four separate pickups; simple screws to move pole pieces close and farther handle that job fine. The design is more appropriate for a flattop, with the very thin height allowing it to attach to the end of the fingerboard above the soundhole. But its application to mandolin looks OK. I would like to see a version of the flattop guitar pickup for celtic-style mandolins.

    several months back,

never heard back from them. Wonder if they're reading this ?

I think that's the model built into an Epiphone F-style mando (MM-50E) that I bought a couple of weeks ago.

Decent but not spectacular sound through my acoustic instrument amps. As others say, it's magnetic, which has its pros and cons relative to other types of pickups. The ability to adjust the volume of each string pair is nice in theory, but I haven't done much with it at this point.

Online prices in the US seem in the $260 range.

I probably wouldn't buy one and retrofit it onto an instrument.

I have one and have gigged with it 4 or 5 times. It came on my Epiphone MM50E. I have lost the plug nut. Does any one have an idea what thread size it is? It being made in Germany I suspect a metrix (9.something mm). The pickup does ok but my little E string pair can not project like the other string pairs. The volume is lacking no matter what on that pair so I have to turn the others way down to balance.

If any one has a clue on the nut I need that would be very helpful. Thanks!

If you go to any music store that does electric guitar work they should have one, I think they are pretty standard. It may be metric, but they will have various jacks and should be able to find you a nut.
