I'm interested in learning the Mandolin. I'm very familiar with Heritage (due to their guitar production) and noticed that they used to produce two mandolins before they gave it up to concentrate solely on the guitar demand. The model numbers were H-40 and H-50. Does anyone know how many were made? Do they ever come up for sale? Anyone heard one? Played one? I just thought I'd look for something that wasn't so "run of the mill". Thanks!

Heritage mandos were contracted out to an ex-Gibson builder in the Kalamazoo area, Aaron Cowles. Not many were made and it's been years since they were available from Heritage, though they occasionally show up on the used market.

I know Aaron well. He's a great guy and I'm sure he'd be
glad to tell you all he knows about them. His shop phone number is (269)-649-3929 if you want to pursue this.

Did he make the original Gibson mandolins? My understanding is that when Gibson left town that a few remained behind and continued doing what that plant did in the orig. tradition of Gibson. They narrowed focus when the demand for Les Paul style guitars was taking most of their time.

My buddy, Antoon, plays a Heritage. It's a beautiful, loud, and woody beast. It has large f-holes and a reverse headstock scroll. Nice hummingbird inlay. Great workmanship.
