    Default So jealous... gig pics

hey guys saw this toast rack at the beginning of the year (nick cave gig) and thought i'd share it for everybody to drool over.... its been so long i can't remember specifics(which are which) but i'm pretty sure 2 of them were the original series, with one of them a re-issue.

    Guessing:
The white one is the original, could be from the 70's. The blue one is a FM-984 if it was sold in the US (an SB-4 if it was sold in the UK), the red one is an SB-4. The red and blue ones were manufactured in Korea for Fender in the early 2000's.

Cool stuff! That's more than I've ever seen in one place! I wonder if the player tunes them differently.

Those would be Warren Ellis's instruments ... we have a couple of threads on Warren around here somewhere. Concur with Dan's guesses on what they are.

sweet... of course if someone knows, it'll be someone here that knows.

    here's a few more...

the Tele was seen on the last Bob Dylan tour that came thru Oz.

The 8ball mando I'm pretty sure was a fender played by Rob - Flogging Molly

also the phantom seen on John Mellencamp. (not mando but hey... some guitarists want a mandoish sound i guess.)

Hm. Who's playing that Tele with Bob? Is it Bucky Baxter?

I'm pretty sure it was Bucky. (also played lap steel etc) I remember trying to find out who the player was and as far as i could figure it was Bucky. There are people committed to documenting the details of Dylan's gigs almost as much as some folk are as knowegeable about Loars around here... though more concerned with Bob himself than the band...

I do remember finding out the string guages from the backline tech, and they weren't balanced. I think they basically used a pack of guitar strings, and used the 4 closest guages...

coincidently enough yesterday i confirmed with the monitor engineer from the nick cave gig that the 1st photo is indeed of Warren Ellis' instuments.

below we have a Tompkins solidbody (unsure if this had tone chambers ala A8)

also one just for fun... the banjocaster.

I can't say for certain, but Bucky's 5-string sure looks like a Blue Star Mandoblaster with a custom finish. (Bruce does make a few instruments without the wacky vinyl tops.)

Not that the band I play in is ready for prime time, but I'll snap a few of my rig from our next gig, Thursday 8/27. If you're in Oakdale CA at about 5:30pm stop by the Farmer's Market.

I was priveleged enough earlier this year to work at the Brisbane leg of Them Crooked Vultures's tour.

Pictured is John Paul Jones' instrument wardrobe (most of it anyways) Featuring a range of instruments made by the Manson Brothers of UK. (Hugh Manson was the tour's mad scientist). Up front is the "Emadola" (octave?) played for Highway 1. In the background there is a Emandobass (bottom courses strung w/ octaves, top in unison) and a bunch of 8 and 10 string basses.

The Bass Alain plays for Highway 1 is a 3/4 scale airline bass tuned GDAE.
Note: there is an old Kalamazoo Gibson (amp) in the background which was backup to the one used onstage as part of Josh Homme's rig.

MNC :The purple creation is a stand up 8 string slide guitar made by Manson for JPJ featuring 2 bass strings which continue past the 6 string saddle.

Also NMC - used all the upload space without a pic of Dave Grohl's drumkit? wow.

Hereby & forthwith, any instrument with an odd number of strings shall be considered broken. With regard to mix levels, usually the best approach is treating the mandolin the same as a cowbell.

In 2007 I posted pictures of an acoustic bass tune GDAE (two octaves below mandolin). I find it interesting that John Paul Jones plays an electric version. Do any of you know of an interview where he talks about why he chose that tuning?
