Speaking of Dobro pickups, the Lace Dobro Sensor is surface-mounted with tape, and it's thin. It's very lightweight too, so a good candidate for edge-mounting if it fits flush to the end of the fingerboard. It might work if you don't mind it being wider than the fingerboard. It's pre-wired to a jack on the end of the cable, so you could test-drive it as a temporary stick-on pickup, before doing a full installation.
I installed one a few years ago, on a resonator guitar that I no longer own. It's a single coil pickup, so it does tend to pick up some buzz and hum around RF fields like computers, neon bar signs, etc. The sound quality was good though. Not as "thick"-sounding as a humbucker, but nicely balanced across the strings, which will help since the mando string spacing might be different from guitar.
