So he was like 9 or 10 years old when Orville started the Gibson company?

The more I learn about Mr. Loar the more I realized his life mirrored that of so many great artist who's genius went unrecognized during their own life times. I was also amazed to learn from Roger Siminoff's news letter article "What was Loar hearing?" that when Loar instruments were tuned down to A=431 to match concert pitch of the time when his instruments were tap tuned they didn't sound very good without the coloring/timbre of the accidental finessing caused by the higher concert pitch today. With my weak math skills I often struggle with the mechanics of tone and music with it's odd symmetry and layout in fifths but I guess it wouldn't be interesting if it were too easy to comprehend.

Thanks for pointing this out Scott

I just got back from Elderly where I played a July 9th 1923 today. The Loar was in perfect tune, the last guy that tuned it and played was Ricky Skaggs when he was there two days ago.

Bill, did a quick search on Elderly, did not see it listed. What are they asking for it?

I also got to examine and play that mandolin, a couple of days before New Year's while we were visiting the in-laws in Ann Arbor. For my first Loar (in good playing condition) it was a treat!

It's in excellent shape. The main thing I remember was the neck felt a tiny bit bulkier than I expected. It plays very easily, but I don't think the action is any lower than normal. The sound is very, very nice, up and down the fretboard and across the strings. Deep well, that.

    Elderly's rocks. I wish I lived closer.

There was a water main break which forced the cancellation of the party this year. Sorry I forgot to forward that to you Mike!
