Noting the anniversary of this article, one of our very favorites from Bill Graham.

I thoroughly agree with Mr Graham's statements. It is really an excellent biography of a difficult and complicated subject. It is one of the very best musical biographies - many fall down by being too full.Smith's is pitched right. I don't know what errors appear, but in such a difficult life to get across, errors will be inevitable.

Monroe had flaws - of course he did. the tensions that drive him make the music that drive us as mandolin players. For every time he cheated on the woman he was cheating on the woman he was cheating on, anohter song. It is not for us to judge his behaviour, but his music. And it is sublime and beautiful and about as perfect as you can get.

Smith and Graham help us realise this. Thank you for posting the review again.
