    Default Aaron Weinstein; Chord Melody

Check out this terrific arrangement of Richard Rodgers' "The Blue Room."

Aaron is a jazz violin virtuoso, product of the prestigious Berklee School of Music, and former mandolin student of Don Stiernberg. The guy knows his way around the frets, too!

That was wonderful! I loved the Joe Pass type bass line and chord comping going on.

Say Don, how about transcribing this and publishing it in Mandolin Magazine for all us wanna be Jazzers!

I'm very proud of Aaron. He took what I showed him about chords and chord melody to another level.
Pete, I'll ask him if he'd like to transcribe this arrangement and share it with us..

Meanwhile you all may want to dig his other videos. On other tunes he uses his electric mandolin(Johnny Gimble tuning) and that lends a cool sound as well. Also, if you want to hear him swing on violin, there are a batch of tunes at my Youtube page of us playing together at a gig that Aaron was kind enough to hire his old teacher on.

When you hear Aaron playing chord melody, I think you're hearing a combination of a Jethro style foundation combined with a lot of jazz guitar influence from Carl Kress, Eddie Lang, Dick McDonough and also contemporary NYC players like Howard Alden, Frank Vignola, and John Pizzarelli, and Bucky Pizzarelli all of whom Aaron has played or toured or recorded with.

I'm very proud of Aaron. Sometimes I kid him about giving up the fiddle and just playing mandolin, but I'm glad he hasn't because I still need a gig now and then.

Pretty cool specially for a younger cat! Nice to see traditions carried on "and" expanded upon.
I was familiar with his fiddlin'........he should definitely keep playing both!!!

He just gets better 'n better. This one he just sent me blows me away; some heavy music theory going on there under the hood.

Berklee done him good, Professor McGann!

It doesn't seem to have hurt him too much but I can't really take any credit; he's a real independent thinker, and lover of a variety of kinds of music, but I think his heart and soul in really in straight ahead jazz playing. He is a very talented young fella who works really hard to make it sound like no work at all...but thanks anyway, Ted!

Happened to wander into the local Jazz club here on Hilton Head Is. one night and Aaron was playing. Great jazz fiddle accompanied by an upright bassist and a drummer on snare. To be in the presence of a cat that young playing the way he played (mostly old jazz standards) was awesome. A very talented and nice guy. If you get a chance to catch him, don't miss it. John

Howdy there. I apologize for not chiming in sooner...I'm new to this forum. I just want to thank everyone for posting their thoughts about my video. Don Stiernberg is responsible for showing me all of the good "hip" chords...I'll take full responsibility for any bad stuff.
