I don't need a lot of work done, just the usual: action at the nut, truss rod adjustment, check and level the frets if necessary. On a guitar I would do it myself but I don't know enough to do a mandolin. Shipping always seems risky to me so I'd rather not ship if I can avoid it. Besides, I would really like to get to know someone local. You'd think with 13-million people the LA/OC area would sport at least one outstanding mandolin tech.
You feel comfortable to do a fret level on guitar? Have the tools already? Do it entyourself. Get Rob Meldrum's E book for the measurements. It is really the same process except for much less relief. I start with the neck flat unstrung, level and crown the frets. I find string tension gives me enough relief. Nut slots and bridge height are no different than guitar, just different measurement specks.
