Default How big are your hands?

As I was thinking about the earlier thread....I got to thinking about how small my hands are. I took a ruler out of my desk at school and spread my left hand until it just about split.......8.5" from the very tip of thumb to the very tip of the little finger. Eric Clapton I am NOT.

Not measureing is something I never thought about. I remember back when I was playing violin that I actually stuck tennis balls between my fingers hoping I could stretch things out a bit.....might work a bit I guess.....but not something I continued.....

Fairly big. From the nut to the 22nd fret if I spread my hand out with little finger on the nut

My fretting hand is about 7.75" - makes my >26" scale bouzouki a bit of a stretch!

Come on Dan, we need a measurement in inches but it sounds like you're a giant

Same as PJ: 9" I don't have a mandolin handy to check fret stretches.
    Interesting.

Fairly big for a girl! Using Dan's method (pinkie on nut to tip of thumb) I can reach the 19th fret (and my mandolin only has 20!)

10 inches on the dot. Due to the thickness of my fingers, I'm not sure it's that much of an advantage.

I don't know the the measurement in question is relevant as we don't play the thumb. I get 6 1/4 from tip of #1 to pinky. #1 is 1/2 inch shorter than spec due to an unfortunate incident with a table saw. Chops in G are not possible, A is difficult, after that it gets easier.

I'm not sure if hand size matters all that much. My hands have been abused for most of my working life, both have carpal tunnel, one has been operated on with not much success( not fingering hand ). I had played guitar for many years, but seriously doubted my hands would be able to work on the small neck of a mandolin, my fat fingers fill a whole fret. Well, guess what? Even with hands that don't flex all that well, I'm able to play to a degree much better than I ever expected, and am finding that working the pinky has even stretched my ability. So don't worry that maybe your hand size will limit your playing. Keep at it and I hope you find more than you ever expected.

Wow! I'm only spanning to the 17th fret! About 8.5 inches. No wonder I dislike the G chop.

8 11/16" I was always jealous of those guys with the big spidery hands and then one day I saw Segovia and he had little fat hands that looked like they should have belonged to a bricklayer!

I can make it almost to 21 with Dan's method, but only to between 12 and 13 in playing position with my first finger on the nut and pinky streching as far as I can...

Basically, my hands are a reasonable size, but my fingers are shorter than I would like....

Just shy of 8" tip to tip.

It does make some chords on mandolin challenging... and I've got a wide neck on my Big Muddy, making it just a wee bit more of a stretch.

Being a bass player I took notice of a lot of really good players have enormous hands. Sounds like a lot of mando players have smallish hands here. Mine are on the smaller side for a bass player but here I'm looking good

    C to C , an octave, on a piano ... about 7" /180mm, [15~16 on (ala DanB)face of fingerboard ] ,
thumb tip at nut line behind neck I can manage to fret C, E str 8th fret, B more useful

Thumb rather short, barely opposing.. [the Kink's "Ape Man" tune enters my mind.. /ear-worm]

    I'll bite! 9" & I can span from c to e an octave above on a standard key-board.
My hands are relatively small but I can play the "message in a bottle" riff (in fifths) in C# on a bass guitar. Took me a long time to master it, though.

Well I didn't have a ruler around last night. There's one here, so 10 1/2" seems to be what I get
