Best mandolin tab book?

Hi

Can anyone tell me of a good mandolin music book with a lot of songs and tabs in a variety of styles, hopefully with a cd? Not looking for an instructional book, just one with a lot of music

Jack Tottle wrote a book much as you decribe nearly 40 years ago that still stands the test of time. It is called "Bluegrass Mandolin" and while it has no CD, you can find the old "soundsheet" on-line. The tabs and notations are all impeccable and he covers a huge amount of ground.

Dix Bruce has one on his website that I purchased a while back that has been very helpful and I use it very often. "Parking Lot Picker's Songbook" Mandolin Edition. The Book also comes with CD's of the songs/tunes. I don't remember for sure but I think that there are over 200 pieces included along with some basic fundamental instruction. I hope this will be of some help to you.

Mandolin Fake Book has a couple of hundred tunes. Reels, old time, bluegrass and even a Dawg tune "Opus 57" which trying to get my fingers around at the moment.

I recommend Steve Kaufman's Four Hour Bluegrass Workout. It's all music and has four CDs. True, it's all bluegrass, and that doesn't meet your requirements, but the songs are pretty much all fiddle tunes, so if you work through it you'll end up with an ability to jam with both bluegrass and celtic and old timey. You'll also improve your playing a lot. I have most of them by heart. Once I learned them, I worked on speeding up and on making them sound beautiful. I'm still working on them.

Actually his book is almost all fiddle tunes with very few bluegrass tunes.

Bud Orr's Mandolin Music Anthology by Mel Bay covers a great deal of ground. I have it. It also has more than just tunes. Ending licks and what not too. This is if you're looking for a book
"including classical & international pieces, jazz, early country, bluegrass, rags, swing, dixieland, rock & blues, plus - music fundamentals, many exercises, studies & techniques, fills & endings, & a chord & rhythm background section" from Elderly's site.

rubbish if you want to learn tunes but fantastic if you want to sing some Bluegrass

Thanks - I ordered the MASTERS and the ANTHOLOGY books as well as a 6 cd set of David Grisman teaching his tunes - I have something similar by Tony Rice and its like having the master sitting next to you going over the details of his styke and philosophy of the intrument - really looking forward to them all. Visiting my folks in DC over the weekend - found out Marty Stuart is playing here Saturday - good times, good times.

I vote for Parking Lot Picker or the Mandolin Fake book. Also, no tabs, but I carry the Sing Out (Rise Up Singing) book to all jams for chords.

I think Roland White's Bluegrass Mandolin book and (2) CDs is the best value for the money. #It definitely leans towards bluegrass but should provide great value to any starter. #You can purchase it from his website - just search on Roland White.

I have been having a lot of fun with 2 of Butch Baldassari's books. One has 25 great tunes and the other has 30 great fiddle tunes. Each book comes with 2 CD's. Well worth the money. I am really enjoying these books. I got the first book just because I was wanting to learn "Swinging On A Gate". Man! that book just clicked for me. So I just got the second one with 30 tunes. If you want to learn some awesome tunes from a great teacher and fantastic picker I highly reccomend his books.

Masters of the Mandolin by Dave Peters (RIP) Just got it, It's really cool.

Parking lot Pickers Songbook by Dix Bruce Not really a TAB book per se but it has the melodies to tons of songs to help you get started figuring out your own solos.

Jack Tuttles, as opposed to Jack Tottle, Mandolin Collection Volume One & Two.There's TAB to about 80 songs and tunes in each volume. It's pretty much all bluegrass but that's my bag.

I also recommend Steve's 4 Hour Bluegrass Work Out and also he has ANOTHER 4 Hour Bluegrass Workout Volume Two out now.

And as BlueMountain says a lot of the fiddle tunes I call "threefers" as in you get three for the price of one.

Many fiddle tunes like Whiskey B4 Breakfast, Soldier's Joy, Red Haired Boy etc. can be played at any bluegrass, Old Timey or Celtic jam.

But you have to remember Steve (on purpose) just gives you the barebones melody of the tunes and it is up to each individual to add their own ornaments to it to make it your own!

He also has the 4 Hour Celtic Workout that I also have and is a great book of just Celtic. If you got the 4 hour Bluegrass and Celtic Workouts you would have enough tunes to learn for many years.

Hmm, I don't have enough--anymore.
I used to have a lot--especially when I taught guitar--but after I stopped teaching I got rid of a bunch of mine--sold them when I was working seasonal jobs and was off work--so I needed some cash--made good cash on them though.
And the next time I moved I had less to move--I had a lot.I've bought some new ones since then--but I'm being much more selective about what I buy.
