I've been shopping at Gryphon Stringed Instruments (Palo Alto, CA) since 1980, and I've never had any concern about their service, quality or prices. They've always been the best for me.
I've also had great experiences with Elderly Instruments (Lansing, MI).

Elderly of course, but then again I live about an hour away...
They always have something I NEED, but usually can't afford...
Something a bit less controversial...
TAMCO in Brighton,England, FQMS & Janet Davis in the USA. Also, when i asked for advice re.tailpieces from Greg Boyd in the USA,i received a very courteous reply, giving me the info.i required. Service & courtesy like that is priceless,

My vote goes to Greg Boyd and his crew. I used to (and soon will again) live near his shop, and it's a great place to go. Usually 20-30 high end mandolins, as well as guitars, b*njos, dobros, etc. Great cutomer service, and a really knowledgeable staff. They have been really good to me through the years.

Vote for Elderly here. Never had a problem, been dealing with them for years.

Had great experiences with John Bernunzio, Vintage Fret Shop, Music Emporium, and Elderly Instruments, but my all-time vote goes to:
Stutzman's Guitar Center
Great little store in Rochester NY; I worked there part-time for Dave Stutzman and his late dad Eldon, and have bought dozens of instruments, ranging from my F-5 and 3-point F-2, my Sobell, Eastman mandola and mandocello, National Triolian, Dobro mandolin, Flatiron OM, Gibson K-1 mandocello -- not to mention Martin and Taylor guitars, Dobro, National Style O and Havana guitars, Guild F-212XL 12-string, Pollman mandoline banjo, some Gold Tone instruments, Regal tiple, Vega Little Wonder banjolin, etc. etc. Dave and Dick Stutzman do all my repairs and adjustments, keep me in strings and picks, and supply me with cases, straps, tuners, and all the little gewgaws that pickers need. They're honest, reasonably priced, and stand behind all the work they do. Hope they're in business forever!

Ya know....I got to thinking and I have rarely bought an instrument from a store. The last time I did it was a guitar from The Mandolin Store and Dennis' service was excellent. Almost all of my mandolin purchases have been right here from the classifieds.
