    Hi Folks,

I want to try a emando with magnetic pickup to jam with drummers, etc. I want to buy something cheap to give it a try.
I noticed the Fender and Rogue hollow A style ones are cheap on ebay. Do they tune and play well? What others might you recommend?

    Thanks

P.S. Apologies if this question has been asked many times.

They are similar , that is to say variable QC some satisfactory some not.
I think a common guitar pickup (strat style) goes on those , so the original pickups that were less succesfully copied by the Asians can be put in it if the neck feels playable.
some prefer 4 string over not in unison 8 when amplified, Mandobirds in that niche.
but, otoh, I have an 8 string EM150 gibson 4 string converted

those A's could be converted too.

whats the risk? you can always put it back up on EBay again..

QC anecdote 2 people in this county got Fender FM61se, Mine seems OK ,
set up well, worthy of pickup and jack upgrade.
the other player, says he feels neck set is not right.

Difference? wednesday and friday, or saturday when the day off was more in the mind of the worker, perhaps..

    Thanks Mandroid,

So a conversion isn't just a matter of leaving 4 strings off?

What about a pickup that could be mounted like a floating mini-humbucker on a archtop guitar? As you might guess I hate the piezo type pickups. It's good to know they are using standard size single coils on the Fender & Rogue models.

Is there a floating mini humbucker with blades instead of poles on the market? Seems like it would easy to mount one on a mandolin without an extended fretboard.

the conversion job on mine put them in the center of the former course, a bit in from the edges and a bridge that places them likewise, the middle ones equidistant from each others.

some [Imported] EMG 'select' are in strat format, humbuckers ,
    and pretty low cost $25
    I got mine from stew-mac.

fender Lace sensor the 'gold' model is on another one,
    paid $40 for it

Bill Lawrence has dual blade which are stated as higher output ,

Kent Armstrong and Benedetto seem to be used in the floating end of the fingerboard setups as you will learn ...
if you read thru many of the Prior Posts.

one of them a clever cut on the end of the fingerboard of a Fender FM62 and a [licensed] Rigel copy by Gold Tone, to fit a
    K armstrong pickup there , ..

and go to links to get electric mandolin resource site ,
also a link in Martin Stillon's posts aka "mr.Mando"

Try Guitarfetish. Their Lil Killer blade humbuckers swap one-for-one with Strat pickups and their Lil Puncher with Tele pickups. I've installed a Lil Puncher on my solid-body emando and it's great -- no hum and strong smooth tone. At $30 each, the price is pretty good, too.

Thanks, the guitarfetish pickups look like a good choice for upgrading a cheap single coil.

The Phoenix Jazz model has the floating type pickup - apparently a Kent Armstrong custom model - that I was thinking would be easy to mount. Maybe they'll start selling it as a standard model. Maybe it's possible to order one?

I have the Fender A style mando. Good sounding rugged thing, but the bridge isn't the best, broke it once, and now there's been this little crack going accross it. That crack has been there for like months now though, so I'll have it for awhile. The good thing about buying the fender is that you can get it fixed by Fender if it has a warrenty. Look for "blems" on musiciansfriend.com every once and a while. I like the pickup it comes with too. Very good clean sounding mando sounds. I honestly can't tell the difference between whether it's amped or not sometimes. Really good sounding instrument. In the meantime look for a good hand made solid body. That'll last WAY longer than this one.
