I know alot of you guys are big on flatwound... I've never tried 'em. Here's what I've got: Schwab 5 string, Mann EM8, and a goofy Bruno E mandola I converted to 4 string. Please advise which sets, or individual guages, I could use on the above 3 instuments.

I understand I'll get a 'jazzier" sound? I'm particularly curious how the Schwab will respond... Let me know your thoughts as I am anxious to explore the possibilities.

    Thanks!

Does your Schwab have a 14.5" scale length? If so:

My Ryder EM-54 4 string electric has a 14.5" scale length, and it works very well in 'dola tuning. I use chrome flatwound Thomastiks with the following string gauges:

    e . I don't have a top 'e', so experiment
    a .014
    d .020w
    g .030w
    c .049w # #

My 'dola tuning equates to the bottom four of your 5 string - you would only have to experiment a little to find the appropriate gauge for your top e string!

Notice that I use a wound 2nd on my 4 string, this would be the 3rd on your 5 string.

The flatwounds are certainly not as bright as roundwounds - if mellow equals jazzier, then I guess they may be what you're looking for.

for the 5 string ; look at guitar flatwound sets and leave the B in the bag.

look for one with a .050 low E
