today i got to play a 10-string a-style mandolin which i believe was built by lawrence smart. The thing about it is that in order to compensate for a low c string, the scale length needed to be longer for the mandolin (which is no fun). so instead he used fanned frets that was compensated by a slanted bridge in order to make the intonation right. The product was a mind boggling looking mandolin. anyone else seen one?
