I've been playing electric mando for about a year and I got my Ryder EOM-35 in late September. I love the how much looser the strings are for bending and things, but god the stretch is bad in lower positions. I find that I usually stick to the upper range, but I get easily lost up there. The thing I love about my regular 5 string is that I can shred through my minor scales in 1st position with no problem at all. But because of the extended scale length on the octave I have to shift or realllllly stretch.

Do many of you EOM players play in 1st position a lot or do you stay up the neck? Should I just work on playing the minor scales through multiple positions and get comfortable with the shifting?

400 mm scale on my mandola feels like as far as I can go without re-learning a lot of shifting to cover the 7 frets.

middle of the string, naturally, would bend easier
than the far end by the first couple frets.

the electrics I have are shorter, 15" max.

heresy on a mandolin board , but 4ths would shorten the chase for notes up by a couple frets.

thats why Cello is as low as it goes in orchestra strings, chasing 5ths on a double bass would be excessive.

enjoy the chase, you have a lot in common with the
tenor banjo folks in that .

Well if I were gonna retune to 4ths, I would just pick up my guitar instead. I might just throw the capo on to the 5th fret and play it like that for awhile. I dont want to play my mandoblaster cause my Ryder sounds like a million bucks!
