I played a late '50s Fender mandocaster yesterday at the LMS. #Now I'm wondering how much they go for? #Checked Google and Ebay already, but not finding much to go on, so I thought I'd ask here. #

Overall condition would be "well-played" (or pretty "beat up" depending on your POV.) #It badly needs a fret job and set up - pots were acting up, as well. #The seller is thinking somewhere in the $1,500- $1800 range. #To me, it seems a bit hammered to be a collectors instrument (far from "Mint",iow) but I honestly don't know anything about the market for these. #

TIA for any input on this.

If it has the anodized metal pickguard, maple fretboard and ash body, GRAB IT for that price. 1956 (first year) through 58 bring the most $$. Its not uncommon to see them go for $2,000 and up. But like most things, it is a matter of a willing buyer and seller at the time.

FYI, I paid $1200 for mine (a '58) on eBay and wouldn't sell it for double that. It is a GREAT e-mando.
    Good luck.

Clem b right. '50s are usually worth a bit more. 1500-1800 sounds fair; restoration wouldn't be too expensive from your description
