Jeff, for when you're no longer mad at your computer, or for anyone else looking for a free MP3 converter, I've had excellent luck with FreeRip.

    Jeff,
This Mac has been threatened with serious harm more than once.
Mandohack, thanks for the link to freerip, but 11 1/2 minutes of download time later I don't have anything I can use. Any suggestions how to get a Mac to open the file?

John, I failed you and other Mac users, in that FreeRip is a .exe file and only works for Windows. (A former Mac user myself, I know how annoying that is...)
Here's another page of Rippers, although I can't make any personal recommendation:

I'm not sure if who's on a Mac and who's not, but if you ARE, iTunes will convert a variety of file types (including .wav) to MP3s quite nicely.

Mike, Thanks for that! I really haven't experimented with iTunes much yet.
    I'll check it out.

Audacity is recording software for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It can save the file as a WAV or MP3. For MP3s be sure to download and unzip the lame_enc.dll file. There's a link for it off the Audacity site.
