I have never used a metronome to practice and would like to try a software version to see if its something I could use to improve. I have an idea of how to practice with one but I'am a little hazy of how it is set up and even what features to look for should I buy one. Any suggestions ?

I checked that out but I guess I am really more lost than I imagined. I was expecting something that gave a count 4/4 as 1,2,3,4 with a different tone for the 4th beat that tells you it is a new measure. A-4 through 208 ? whats that.
I know that I am the ignorant end of this exchange and I appreciate the link but I am still looking. Thanks

The one I use is Weird Metronome. As this uses Windows standard routines, it's a ludicrously small download. Indeed, at only 24 kB it's the smallest program of any sort I've seen in at least ten years. Nevertheless, it gives you perfect flexibility of tone and rhythm. Anything from a straight metronome click to the most complex 7/32 rhythm with a different tone for each beat (if that's what you want). It also has a decent visual cue (a blinking light).

The A4 is the same as the A440 check off box. It plays a tone of 440 cycles-per-second, which happens to be the frequency of an A. It should match the tone of your mandolins A string. The other numbers 40 to 208 represents beats per minute. That's your metronome.

You can buy metronomes that provide the features you are asking about.
