Darrel made a 5 string emando that has 2 Fender pickups that he said are" Specially designed for 5 string mando". He further says that "Humbuckers would not work as well as they are not designed for 5 string spacing" I assume that the fender pickups on his emando are single coil. Do these pickups have good repute?

Electric mandolin pickups are rare beasts. The ones with individual pole pieces are usually custom built and pricey. Sometimes builders use electric guitar ones that have unitary blades instead of multiple poles. These are reputed to work well. The cheap and cheesy solution is to (re)use bass pickups, but their four strings are much lower pitched than a mandolin and the pickups usually don't work as well as purpose-built.

so then what is your conclusion about the Fender pickups that he uses on his 5 string mandos? he says it's specially designed for a 5 string mando...i can't find anywhere a modern fender pickup that is designed for a 5 string mando..or does he really mean that its for a 5 string bass? .(by the way the mando he made has 2 fender pickups)

Haven't seen them. I know Fender has made 5 pole mandolin pickups for custom instruments and for their cheapies. I've never played an original Mandocaster, only their current slave-labor electric mandolins, of which I'm not a fan.

So then i should ask him if those particular pickups on his mando are custom 5-poll fender pickups?

Just edited my previous response. Look on the wonderful www.emando.com under builders/Fender. That will show you what Fender has made.

i imagine it's not from a mandocaster since they are no longer in production.. i guess i should ask him if they are custom fender pickups(pickups he got custom made from fender). Also i should ask him to give me a summary of the general sound character of his emando that he made..

If they're just spares from a newish import Fender 5-string mandolin they're probably not very good. If Fender made them in the Custom Shop here, I'd be surprised if they weren't decent. But, this is all conjecture. Your mileage may vary...

the only ones for 5 strings , im aware of made by fender are those fitted to the FM60 mandolin, made for Fender in korea.

the Fender lace sensor line has worked fine for me,(i have the 'gold' version)
its a non pole type design, so either 4 0r 5 string is fine, white plastic cover, strat type.

what you do have, does it sound good to you?
