You can buy those packets that go into the pouches on Amazon for far less than from D'Addario. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...ram+-+10+Pack+

    They seem to work.

From the Amazon page it looks like they come in 58% and 62% RH. Both are way too high for a mandolin. I use a couple of Planet wave humidifier and try to keep the RH at around 40%.

You want to put them in the saddle bag pouches. They work great but there are some horror stories of people that break the bags. They are actually made by Boveda. The bag will get to the point where it no longer feels like a gel, it will start to feel like it is filled with pellets. Change it then. It will eventually turn hard as a rock. It will have stopped working before that.

Boveda sells a 49% bag that they recommend for wooden instruments.

They are actually the single best humidifier I've found for guitars. They are a little cumbersome for mandolin. You need to respect the fact that you are dealing with a paper bag full of a gel material.

I have used them with good effect. I always place them in the case where any leakage (should it occur) would run AWAY from the instrument.

I have also used the Oasis humidifiers which work the same way but seem to me to be a little less likely to leak. (I still place them carefully in the case.)
