I used one layer/winding of PTFE tape and it worked brilliantly.
PTFE tape in the UK is a tape used to seal plumbing joints to make them water tight, I don't know what you call it in the US.

We call it Teflon tape. Teflon is just a brand name for PTFE.

I have heard of people using it that way, but it doesn’t make sense to me that it would work. It’s the same stuff used to make non stick coatings on pots and pans. It’s made to reduce friction, not increase it.

In this case it works as a shim not a lube, same thing when used as a seal in plumbing, it fills the void in thread or in the tapered hole -plug making fit tighter.

Yes, and if your strap is over your right shoulder as God and Bill Monroe intended, you won't be tempted to let go.

I prefer plumber's tape. One, two, three. Here come the plumber's crack comments.

I just call it plumber's tape. Always worked for me.

    1. It’s not a “strap peg”. It’s an end pin. It was never designed to use with a strap.
My pet peeve is the so called "pick guard". It is a finger rest. You might notice that your pick never touches the top of a mandolin without one. Top wear is caused by fingernails etc.
Yeah, painter's tape works great to secure the end pin.

Ivan, I want to correct my above post and say that I used clear nail polish my wife loaned me rather than wood glue. You were the one who suggested it and it was a great solution. I am amending my previous reply.

I glued my endpin back into my Eastman with rubber cement. So far so good.

    2. Why is it there, then? Because Orville, and later Lloyd, were trying to incorporate violin design elements into their mandolins.
    .......

    6. In Lloyd Loar’s day, mandolin was a mostly classical instrument. Mandolin orchestras were the thing. Most players played sitting down, without a strap. There was no bluegrass yet,
I'm with you on this in theory....but

I see Steve's point..even though I sit AND stand and do not use a strap on a mandolin....any mandolin.

And is very useful to help use as a spacer to very gently touch the right hand and help keep it in the plane of the strings. same as on archtop guitars.

I'm a bit surprised when someone removes the finger rest and then needs to plant the pinky to use as a spacer.

Of course a good bowlback has the strings much closer to the soundboard and does not need a finger rest.

Back to Steve's issue - it is easier to do the Bluegress microphone dance and stick your mandolin in front of the mic when you can extend it on a strap.

To Philphool…..Exactly what I do to eliminate the problem if the end pin from comes out or just the strap slipping off the pin.

As others said above: wrap the peg in painter's tape (the blue tape painters use), and then push it back up into the hole. This is one of those cases when the easiest solution is also the best.

That would be much too easy and we wouldn't need 39 replies.

We have a winner! Keep it simple. I think my roll of blue painters tape has "fixed" almost as many things as my roll of duct tape!

Also, good for loose knobs on electric guitars -- teeny bit of tape between the knob and the pot will fix it. I used to spread the tangs on the shaft, then reinstall the knob -- worked great until I spread one too far and it broke off -- again, keep it simple -- blue painters tape is the way to go!

I have had countless mandolins and guitars and many of them have had ill fitting endpins. Once snugged up with painters tape, they have never accidentally come out. I'm sure this thread will go on for pages and pages, as is the nature of the internet, but you can be long done with this problem with 10 seconds and an inch of tape.
Just re-upping this to get to 3 pages...

To all of you who keep insisting that a piece of blue painter’s tape is the “simple” and “best” solution, why are you trying to ruin the fun of all us nitpickers?
