    Default Slotted tail-piece screws?

Anyone know where I can order three slotted tail-piece screws?

I’m replacing all the Philips head screws on the MD404 with slotted heads.

I’d go to the old dusty hardware store in your area. Lowe’s or Home Depot won’t be much help but, you might get lucky.

Funny you put those links up. I was thinking of replacing the long TP screws with slotted tuner screws, but I’m afraid they won’t hold the pressure..

Is this a good idea? I do have extra slotted tuner screws

If you're looking for silver look for Stainless Round Head slot drive screws in the size and length. Check Fastenal.com if you don't like the screws on Stewmac or you can't find them at your local hardware store.

It's just my own idle curiosity but, why?

I would understand if someone had put Phillips-heads, invented in the '30s, on a vintage instrument. But I tend to think of Phillips as safer & less prone to slippage with subsequent marring of adjacent surfaces (ask me how I know!). But hey, if it's your personal taste then, why not?

Do I deduce from the photo that you're also replaceing nickle/steel screws with gold/brass looking ones? Again, why not!

Totally aside commment: I used to work in downtown Manhattan which had some of the worlds' best, oldest, and dustiest hardware stores, especially north of the WTC. Spent hours wading thru 50 lb. drawers looking for just the right screw or gear. Sadly, they all disappeared by the mid-'90s or so.

Hardware stores in the Ace system have what I call the Wall of Fasteners, which includes specialty and decorative screws, including small slotted-head versions. I used some anodized black slotted flathead wood screws for a speaker cabinet I made.

I’ll have a look at what Ace has this weekend. Thanks for the tip.

This won't help you today, but I've developed a habit of picking up jars of screws or parts cabinets in screws, etc., when I see them at an estate sale. Usually the whole jar is dirt cheap and you might use something in it for a repair down the road.

Those NYC hardware stores sound like some we still have in Mississippi. I live close to one 3-generation family hardware store and another 4-generation hardware store is a few miles farther.

I've actually been buying up new old stock nickel screws on eBay when I can find the right size. I also have been changing Gotoh tuners over to slotted screws for a while now. It's a nod to a more traditional look. I like the idea. Yes, I know Phillips are easier to screw in (sometimes).

One thing to watch for when buying new fasteners. Cheese head slot drive screws are not round head slot head screws but if it's all you can get it's all you can get. Google the DIN specs for metric screw heads. Sometimes it's easier to search for them if you have the right number.

Would I have issues using tuner screws in place of the standard TP screws if both screws being the same diameter?

    Nope.
The tailpiece screws do next to nothing anyway. The string tension is doing most of the work. The screws are mostly just in shear, meaning the length is negligible.

Worse case fill the hole with a round toothpick and some white glue (Yes, I said that). Then put the screws in. It should make them nice and snug.

Have a look at the ''Allparts'' website. I've bought truss rod cover 'sized' screws from them in the past,& they managed to dig up a set of Black Gotoh tuner buttons for me = you never know what they might have lying around !.

Realistically - the screws used for tailpieces etc.,are simply screws of the ''appropriate size'' = there's nothing special about them,

Now, come on, I paid extra for a set of TP screws that were driven past the front of the Parsons street location five times to increase their “Mojo”! Don’t tell me it was Booooooogus!
