Supposedly Howard Hawks and his wife called each other "Slim" and "Steve," so he had Bogie and Bacall call each other that. Now, why Mrs. Hawks called Mr. Hawks "Steve" instead of Howard is likely to remain a mystery.

Jaycat! Surely you had heard the above “Slim/Steve” story before!
What woman in a fit (passion or rage) would scream “Howard”? But, I digress.

And, if you had not, I’ll stop calling you Shirley...oops wrong movie reference, to be fair, I do not think there were an Mandolin references in ANY of the “Naked Gun” series.

This thread reminds me of a few years ago when the mandolin in the film MEET ME IN ST LOUIS came up for sale on eBay. I almost bought it for the Old Hollywood cool factor but didn’t. I think it’s sold for only a coupl hundred bucks or so.

Interesting that we have now touched on:
    The Big Sleep
    The Maltese Falcon
    To Have and Have Not

Only one of which has any Mandolin content as far as I can recall!
But, if you have enough of General Sternwood’s cocktails, you might just hear them everywhere!

Looks like a Martin guitar head stock in the photo. American made instruments in Casablanca during those days and times, back in the day when we exported the good stuff.

I’m pretty sure both the tenor and six string guitars are Martins.

With the mandolin being some version of American manufacture and the Martins, all made in the USA I would guess that the whole movie was made on a Hollywood studio lot. If it was actually Casablanca there might be a bowl back mandolin and one of those Django guitars. I imagine the band must all be American expatriates doing a gig in Casablanca because the money was good for those days when playing in a French bistro, night club.

Of course the movies were shot on a soundstage! But, you’re mixing two movies.
    “Casablanca” is in Morocco
“To Have and Have Not” is in Martinique.

Most studio production is propaganda except “Guardians of the Galaxy” of course, which is pure fact!

    So, what’s your point?

Hollywood was a tool used to influence the public perception of world events. Later it was used to bolster the home front to the sacrifice the herculean task was going to take to win the war. The finest actors, directors, and writers were up to the task, in fact they were far better at it than their Nazi counterparts.

And nothing has changed, has it?
