Default Classical mandocello duos: Jacques Offenbach, Op. 49 (c. 1850)

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880): Cours Méthodique de duos pour deux violoncelles (Op. 49 - 54)

    Op. 49 No. 1 in C Major:
    1. Allegro moderato - 0:00
    2. Andante - 3:23
    3. Rondo: Allegretto - 4:50

Before he became famous as a composer of operettas, Jacques Offenbach was already a celebrated cello virtuoso. He published a large number of cello duos, mainly in two collections of progressive methodological studies. This is the first (and easiest) duo of the second collection, published in the early 1850s.

I have recorded all three movements on mandocello. They transfer very nicely to plucked strings, in particular the cheerful final rondo. It's technically straightforward and all in first position, but shares with Offenbach's famous later works his irrepressible sense for melody.

The edition I have used is from Musescore:

With the free Musescore software, it's straightforward to adapt for other plucked instruments, such as octave mandolins, tenor guitars, mandolas or mandolins.

    Thanks, Chuck.

Here is another of the Offenbach duos: the Rondo from the fourth duo in Op. 49.

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880): Cours Méthodique de duos pour deux violoncelles (Op. 49 - 54)
    Op. 49 No. 4 in G Major: (b) Rondo Allegretto - 4:50

The edition I have used is again from Musescore:

    https://musescore.com/user/102315/scores/133134

The original edition is also on IMSLP:

This one is nice and bouncy and cheerful, and the more percussive nature of the plucked string over the bowed cello enhances this quality.

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880): Cours Méthodique de duos pour deux violoncelles (Op. 49 - 54)
    Op. 49 No. 5 in F Major:
    1. Allegretto ma non troppo - 0:00
    2. Adagio - 2:55
    3. Tempo di minuetto - 4:01

Here is another of the Offenbach duos. This is the fifth duo of the second collection (Op. 49). I can't find the Musescore.com link now, so I'm attaching the parts here. I have changed them from bass clef to octave treble clef.

I have recorded all three movements on mandocello.

    Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880): Ecole du violoncelle (Op. 19 - 21, 34)
    Op. 20 No. 1 in C Major (1839):
    1. Allegro

Here is another one of my recordings of the Offenbach cello duets -- the last one for now, I think. I have recorded several of the duos in Offenbach later set of progressive duets (Op. 49) over the last couple of weeks. This is a movement from the duets in his earlier cello method, Op. 20 No. 1, published when Offenbach was 20. Rather longer and more varied than any of the movements in Op. 49, but similarly interesting rhythmically and melodically.

    The score is at:
