Thread: Weber BigHorn 2010

    Default Weber BigHorn 2010

I recently bought a bighorn 2010 signed by Bruce Weber. I haven’t received it yet. Are these good bluegrass mandolins? With the larger chamber I thought it would cut good in the mix. Opinions and thoughts? I have 72 hours to try it out.

    Thanks

Does it have F-holes or an oval hole? If it is the one I am thinking about that was in the Cafe classifieds with F-holes it should be a fine bluegrass mandolin. I have only heard good things about them.
I have been tempted by the oval holed ones in the past, they don't seem to come up for sale that often.

    Enjoy your new mandolin!

The one I played at Lowe Vintage was a keeper on all points (pun intended). Overpriced but I still had thoughts of taking it home. I was there to explore neck shapes for a build I was waiting on or I'd own it. Plus they look cool to me

I have owned one for 9 years and love it. Big and booming with wonderful tone. I prefer over any Collins. Enjoy it. There is a great one for sale right now at Fiddlers Green Music Shop in Austin. I played it for a while and is excellent. A great mandolin priced low 3K

You will not be disappointed, nothing collings makes can stand up to a Bruce signed Weber IMO.
You stole it for $2850. Enjoy.Click image for larger version.

Now you got me really excited. What strings do you have on it? Does a standard toneguard fit the bighorn?

    Hey Mike,

    Do you play the mandolin?
    Are you real?
If both are true, you are a real mandolin player.
If it does not take food off the table, keep you from paying the mortgage, etc., get a Weber if that's what you want.
    Life is short.

This Weber vs Collings thing smacks of Taylor vs Martin.

I have a Bighorn and it is great. They are very good and the 2 points have the largest resonating cavity of any Weber, at least the web site used to claim that. All I know is that they are loud and woody and fun to play.

I have one that I bought in 2007. I'm so in love with it. It can do anything. And look good doing it.
    You're going to love it.
Check out The Past and The Curious, a fun podcast for families, kids and adults who enjoy exploring the past. In addition to tales from the past, there's always an original musical performance. I play mando, guitar, and banjo and am occasionally joined by some great musicians. It's pretty good.

The only f hole Bighorn I ever played was one of the loudest mandolins I've ever played.

To be clear here: Weber = Martin, Collings = Taylor, right? In the dark vs bright sound category (I realize this is oversimplified, same with Martin vs Taylor, especially after Taylor fattened up the sound in some of their newer high-end models.

Not to my ears, no. But I think a great deal of the timbre comes from the pick material, how the pick is beveled (or not) and the angle at which the pick crosses the string. To say nothing of the type of strings on the instrument.

Nice! Is that your Bighorn with an F-style headstock?
    I like it!

Of course I am biased, I have a 2004 Bighorn:

Love it! So I don't see Bighorns on the Weber website but every now and then I see one for sale posted as "new". Are they only available on custom orders through a Weber dealer? BTW, the Oval BH would definitely be up on top of my wish list!
