Thread: My mandolin exploration

    Default My mandolin exploration

Since buying an Eastman a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been listening to a lot of mandolin music. So far, I really like David Grisman and Chris Theile. Who else should I be listening to? So far, I think I prefer the more modern stuff to traditional bluegrass and old time, though I remember falling hard for Dolly’s Little Sparrow, Emmylou’s Blue Kentucky Girl and Steve Earle’s The Mountain, and I think those are pretty traditional?

The artists above are definitely ones to review.
One other that hooked me even before I started to play. Actually put the bug in me to learn mandolin, was Tim O’Brien. I really got bit when he and Darryll Scott played together. There is an album that the two of them did together that is lots of fun.
Enjoy the journey! There is so much with which to be enamoured.

Just followed the Sarah Jaroz link, which led me to I’m With Her. They had me at Crossing Muddy Waters, but it was all good. Not much mando, though. She played a lot of the guitar-sized instrument with four courses. Octave mandolin? Mandocello?

If you have any interest in Irish traditional music, Mick Moloney's Strings Attached is terrific. Mick plays mandolin and tenor banjo so beware-- this might tempt you to take up Irish tenor banjo!

Ry Cooder's mandolin work on his early albums is what drove me back to the mandolin, several years after my Czech pawnshop bowlback wore out. (Brass frets?!)

I think we need to mention Frank Wakefield, traditional with an ability to explore the dark corners. Jody Stecher and Don Julin too. And if you sometimes feel the blues, Rich Del Grosso.

I’m on the phone and won’t be adding a link, but not mentioned yet (I think) is Brian Oberlin. Find his site and listen to the free tracks, I don’t think you’ll regret it.
