Default My Rough And Rowdy Ways

I often publish stuff on YouTube that's really just "raw practice stuff." This one is no exception.

As a guitarist, I pick and play some Jimmie Rodgers tunes for people, and today I decided to see how some of my guitar licks on My Rough And Rowdy Ways might translate to mandolin. I kind of like how it's going, so here is an unpolished, mostly unrehearsed version, not quite comfortable with it under my fingers yet, but I'm shameless enough to show it to the mandolin community anyway. Shot with an iPhone like a typical practice video.

Long live Jimmie Rodgers! I will polish this one up and play it live in public some day soon. Thanks for indulging me in this rough and rowdy version of it. My apologies to Jimmie.

Well, I would say that 'rough' is a style that can be used to great effect and you can make it work for you. Like in this tune. Good work. You might could polish some roughness but don't get it too smooth.

You get good, authentic feel to this one Mark. I'd be wary of further polishing for this song.

Cripes Mark, someday my polished will be up to your rough level. Well done, and I think Jimmie would be just fine with it!

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Polishing means trying a few different chord choices, playing the runs with precision and getting it under my fingers to the point I can actually sing on the one without thinking about the mandolin--and maybe with a smile? I like this one, and I'm amazed sometimes at how easy it can be to transfer certain styles over to mandolin.

    I agree with soliver! ^^^^

We are often too critical of ourselves when judging by our own ears.....this sounds just as it should IMO.

    Great job!

I enjoyed that a lot, Mark, your singing reminds me of Leon Redbone. I've never heard the original, but if I may make a suggestion, if you substitute a C dim chord for the D7 you play over "Countrified", it might fit better. Of course, it's a matter of taste, but that's what I would play.

Appreciate the suggestion. I’ll try the diminished chord there. I’m not used to making that chromatic fun from C to D7 on mandolin and it’s awkward using that D7 shape there. On guitar, I move from an open C chord to the D7 using the C7 shape slid up two frets and it’s pretty smooth. This is an early, pretty countrified tune by the singing brakeman.

That was great. Honestly I don’t often listen through the whole video, but I did this time.
Plus you have a great voice, very rough and rowdy.
I now need to look up that song.

Doc Watson’s version is great (unequaled IMO), Merle Haggard’s (or was it Waylon Jennings?) version is OK, but give the original by Jimmie Rodgers some love when you work this one up.

Precisely - I couldn't decipher what you were singing so I looked up the lyrics on genius.com, and they misinformed me. "Counted vile" is way cooler. Doc and Merle sing "I may be tough but its just my style". I followed your youtube links and listened to that passage in all 3 versions; Doc and Merle both play I / I7 / IV / IV , it's hard to tell exactly, but it sounds to me that Jimmy is playing I / I7 / IV / Idim - I played along and it certainly fits, and is stylistically in keeping with country music of the time.

I like that you're taking an interest in this tune. The Idim probably will work better there, I'll try it. I don't play this tune myself exactly like any of the three on guitar; I listened to Jimmie and Doc when I wanted to learn it, and that D7 didn't really sound right now that you've brought it up. I know Doc stays on IV but I just hear the change Jimmie plays there.

It was your singing that caught my attention. I don't play much music in this genre - Web Pierce's "There stands the Glass" and Floy Tillmans "Gotta have my baby back" (which I learned from a guy who learned it from an Ella Fitzgerald record) are about all there is in my repertoire. At present I'm mainly playing scottish and breton stuff, though I'm not above just doing something wierd; I've just finished arranging Santana's "Moonflower" for Bagpipes, Fiddle and Mandolin!

I got back around to playing with this a bit, and have to say that so far, I'm liking a D7 on that last phrase better than the Cdim ... but I'm using a different voicing now for that last D7, I'm playing 5-0-0-2 there and liking the sound of that.
