You really can't go wrong with an MT. It took me a half dozen tries over six months to come around to the Collings sound, but I do appreciate their sound now.

Br1ck, I would guess you mean the brightness aspect or...? I had one before and found the sound to be strong, but not the throaty mid-range of say my Gibson Flatiron F5. I wanted something with a wider nut, a radiused board and a more modern tone and volume. I will probably use it for Irish tunes and singing, while I will keep playing the Flatiron for bluegrass. The Gibson A ovals are perfect for classical and folk, in my way of organizing things.

I’ve never gotten used to the sound of their guitars. I keep seeing them highly praised, so I pick one every time I get a chance. Bright. Like loud Taylors, without the chime that is Taylor’s charm. They are beautifully made, though.

I have owned Taylor guitars and they are incredible, but they can't touch a Collings. I am loving this new Collings mandolin. Instruments are very personal and I can appreciate your viewpoint and know it is the right call for you, Tim. We each know what we love to hear and play. Enjoy that which makes you happy!

Yes, it's the brightness of the Collings that took a while to like, but then I built my Arches, and it's very much in the same vein. A friend pointed out how they cut through in a mix. Just another flavor of good.

Likewise. I think my ears are tuned to the Martin sound, particularly the Martin mahogany warmth. Collings mandolins, however... I have never heard one I thought sounded anything short of excellent.

OlDan-- Darn! That was the price of mine. But then, I do love the tone and action is sweet, too! Someone will be happy. Those are hard to land for less than $2800-- MT2, I mean.

Steve, I went to G.C. and played Martin HD28 and Gibson's, etc., but nothing had the tone, sustain, volume, or rich woody flavor of my vintage, top of the line, 1976 Guild D55 (Dread of course). She needs to be played while I am still around. I needed a mandolin with a wide nut and comfortable radius to practice and get serious practice time on. It is nothing short of spectacular so far. The notes beg to be played -- the frets only require a simple arrival...I still love, love, love my Flatiron! Nice variety. And, yes, I struggled with my choices. I sold three guitars and a mandolin to buy this and I am both glad to thin the herd and proud of the outcome. Thanks for all your help!

Oh I’m not saying Taylor’s are in the same level with Collings. I. Just not a fan of very bright guitars. And in all fairness, my experience with Collings is very limited.

Fair enough, Tim. A couple things we agree on-- Taylor's are excellent. Brightness can be a detractor when it is found in the absence of warmth. Isn't it great how instruments have so many tonal characteristics? Thanks friend!

I’ve played a few Taylor guitars that were really about as good as it gets — to me anyway. But every Collings guitar I’ve ever played was that way. My own guitar is a Larrivee which I like more than almost every guitar I’ve ever played. My motto: Find what works and stick with it.

Would love a Larivee, Caleb. They have an outstanding reputation. By the way, the clear, ringing tone and sustain of this Collings MT is really impressive. The action, the frets, the neck, the finish-- all so sweet! I am in love with this Collings Mandolin. Like coming home. I see why you love yours. Dan

I did sell the Festival and used the funds to buy a Martin 000-28. It is just right. Warm and loud with sustain. Just small enough to jump from finger picking folk to playing acoustic blues. Miss the Festival, but I think I am going to like the Ratliff R-5 (F5 style).
