Default D'Addario EXP 74 New York steel....anybody else have rust?

I ordered a bunch of New York Steel EJ 74's, they came in paper wrappers and some of them have rust/discoloration on them, I contacted customer service but I will only say it's possibly a phone call they will use for training, they gave me no answers, just said "Sorry about that" I'm a little out of sorts on this, never had a problem with their strings in 40 years, thanks for letting me vent a little, I'll move on

Music wire is a carbon steel all core wires and plain ones use it.

you, as I do, live by the sea.. and sea mist is corrosive.. salt water..

some companies are now vacuum packing strings.. seek those out.

I just installed a set of D'Addario EJ73 strings on one of my mandolins. The set was an unopened older one that had the plastic outer sleeve and the strings were in paper sleeves. There were signs of rust on the strings but I knew they were old.I have a newer set of the same string and the outside package is cardboard and the strings are sealed in a corrosion proof barrier.
I would guess that whoever sold you those strings sold you old stock that has been sitting around for awhile.

I'm not assuming this is the case with your purchase but counterfeit strings have become a huge problem and I know that personally I have ordered fake elixir guitar strings from amazon before. I am intimitley familiar with their strings and it was obvious that they were not real elixirs. Daddario started putting a serial number on their packaging to combat the fakes. Also I have purchased fairly old strings from a store that were rusty in the package. My 2 cents. Good luck in the future,

Did you contact the place you ordered them from?

I ordered direct from D'Addario, yes I contacted them, yes those that live by the sea have to deal with rust, these were fresh from the factory.

If they sent you rusty strings then they should replace them. From what I have heard in the past their customer service has been good.
You might want to give them another call and explain that they haven't used paper sleeves for individual strings for a long time.

    Good luck.

I’m with Charley, I’d contact them again and maybe you’ll be helped by someone else at D’Addario.

Somebody help me with this if I'm wrong, but isn't the coating supposed to prevent this kind of thing? I know eventually it will wear off, but shouldn't it work until they're at least installed?

These strings came straight through D'Addario ...here's they're response "Any strings with corrosion baggies are being printed with codes. We are working at the factory level in order to switch all of our strings into these baggies. We appreciate your patience."

Again I contacted their customer service, sent them pictures of the paper strings and the rust on at least 2 sets

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Daddario does not sell directly to customers. Most companies in fact do not. The page I found on their site directs you to one of their dealers for purchase...

Edit: after further investigation, I found the buy now section on the full version site. It's kind of odd they offer several places to purchase through one of which is the "Daddario store" as well as Amazon...

I have never bought a bad set of Daddarios. That's in 25 years or so.

But I guess it could happen.

I bet the customer service you talked with first had probably never heard anybody being
dissatisfied with their strings. Kind of a shock maybe;like,"This does not compute." Gaaa!
